Academics
What students learn at Riverbend, from kindergarten to grade 8.
Lower School: kindergarten to grade 4
Children learn to read with phonics and a classroom library of more than a thousand books. Mathematics starts with blocks and number lines and builds to fluency with facts. Science happens outside as often as in.
Upper School: grades 5 to 8
Students change classrooms for each subject and take on longer projects: a grade 6 newspaper, a grade 7 river study with the county water lab, and a grade 8 capstone they present to families in May.
Every grade
- Art and music twice a week, taught by specialists.
- Spanish from kindergarten.
- Computer science from grade 3, from block coding to a first programming language.
- Library every week, in our original 1958 schoolhouse.
